Natural disasters and home insurance coverage

Natural disasters are severe weather events that pose a threat to property or human safety and health. Since 1980, there have been 395 such events. Up to November 1, 2024, 24 in the United States caused over 1 billion dollars in damage. While it’s impossible to be prepared for every natural disaster, especially with the increasing frequency due to climate change, home insurance is one of the best safeguards you can have. At W.B. Adams Company in Beaverton, OR, we are here to help our customers secure the coverage they need to be protected.

Potential Natural Disasters

Some natural disasters, such as severe thunderstorms, floods, and extreme heat, can occur anywhere in the country. However, hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes, landslides, tsunamis, wildfires, and earthquakes are more prevalent in certain areas. In Oregon, many of these are a danger.

Does Home Insurance cover Natural Disasters?

This is a complex question. The honest answer is that some are and some aren’t. Heavy wind, tornado, and hurricane damage are covered by most home insurance unless they are specifically excluded. If they are excluded, you should be able to buy an additional policy to cover this type of natural disaster. However, when it is covered, it doesn’t cover any flood damage that may result from these types of events. Flooding requires separate flood insurance, which is offered by the NFIP.

Most home insurance policies cover fires, including wildfires, but in areas that are prone to wildfire, they may be excluded. Landslides and earthquakes are also excluded. Essentially, talk to your insurance agent to ensure you have the protection you need.
